Lost 1 betta girl when I started the sorority, 2 zebra danio when I started the community tank, and 1 platy just overnight last night and they were all new platys (the rest look to be in perfect health except one had what I think were internal parasites but I nipped those with praziquantel and he's fine now).īasically like everyone else said, I think it just depends on the particular store and who's working at it. I've gotten almost all my fish from the Petco 5 minutes away, and though I have lost a few, I think it was mostly due to the stress of the move and less because they were already sick. They're ALL covered in gunk and yuck and the bettas were all extremely sickly looking except for probably 5 or 6. The Petco about 20 minutes from me, however, has the WORST looking fish I've ever seen. I brought it to their attention and he gained weight and then was purchased. That said, my very local Petco (about 5 minutes from me) has fantastic looking fish most of the time, and their bettas are treated as well as they can be considering they're cupped - I've only ever seen one unhealthy looking betta there and that's because he appeared to be underfed. They were ALL covered in yuck and just extremely unhealthy looking. I don't think I've ever been to a Petsmart in my area that had good looking fish. Coming into work everyday and watching beautiful fish go from curious and full of life to dying a slow, uncomfortable death is probably quite numbing. Minimum wage high schoolers that probably really cared for the fish at first, but due to the uncaring policies and neglectful attitude of the corporation and store managers were probably forced to shut off emotionally when having to work around the fish in poor conditions. At least when they're in small unfiltered cups, they aren't at risk of getting diseases from other sick fish. Keep in mind, the water is all connected in their bowls, due to the filtration system. Many of the fish were dead in cloudy water. Either thrashing violently (ich is my guess) or just lifeless, clamped, and appearing to barely hang on to life. So, the fish were behaving one of two ways. All of the fish's water was connected by the tubes of their filtration system. Want to contribute to our wiki? Request a flair? Please message the mods.
